The Wipers' second studio album, "Youth of America", was released by Park Avenue record label in 1981. It was a departure from their previous album, "Is This Real?", with longer and more complex compositions, such as the title track which runs for over 10 minutes.

According to the band's frontman, Greg Sage, the change in pace was a deliberate response to the trend of releasing short songs that many punk bands were following at the time. The album's genre has been described as post-punk and has been praised for its unique style, which blends garage rock, gothic and punk elements.

Despite initially receiving a lukewarm reception in the US, the album has since become influential, with musicians such as Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth citing it as an inspiration. The title track has been covered by several bands, and the album has been included on various "best of" lists, such as Pitchfork's "The 200 Best Albums of the 1980s".
