The album's title track, "Doom Town" and "So Young" define the band's dense, methodical, and chunky aggression, with heavy, cloudy guitars, according to Jack Rabid in a review for Trouser Press. AllMusic's Andy Kellman also praised the album and noted that it's doubtful that the Wipers allowed any influences to creep into the record. In a retrospective review, Nick Sylvester for Pitchfork described the album as "nearly immediate songs that sound out of reach", and "contrarian, distinctly Sage-like".
In 1989, the Dutch magazine OOR ranked "Over the Edge" the 23rd best album of the 1980s.
It was also included in Kurt Cobain's top 50 albums of all time, along with the band's first two albums. The title track was covered by Hole, Mono Men, Bored!, Red Fang, and several others, while "Messenger" has been covered by Mazes.
