"Rain Dogs" is a studio album released in 1985 by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits. It is known for its diverse range of musical styles and features appearances by guitarists Keith Richards and Marc Ribot.
The album is considered part of a trilogy with "Swordfishtrombones" and "Franks Wild Years" and is about "the urban dispossessed" of New York City. It was a commercial success, reaching the UK charts at number 29 and the US Billboard Top 200 at number 188. In 1989, "Rain Dogs" was ranked 21 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 greatest albums of the 1980s".
Tom Waits wrote and recorded the majority of "Rain Dogs" in a basement room in Lower Manhattan in 1984, using a variety of instruments including marimba, accordion, and banjo. He also recorded street sounds and ambient noises to capture the city's atmosphere. The album was notable for its organic sound and the unconventional methods used to achieve it, such as using a chest of drawers in the bathroom as a drum set and hitting it with a two-by-four.
