The album showcased the duo's experimentation with various electronic styles, including house music. "Surrender" saw The Chemical Brothers exploring new sounds and styles, with "Let Forever Be" paying tribute to The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." The album's breakout single, "Hey Boy Hey Girl" has a rave sound, while "Out of Control" is influenced by house music. The duo worked with many of the artists featured on the album again in the future.

Although "Surrender" did not feature Beth Orton, who had appeared on the duo's previous albums, she would go on to appear on their next album, "Come with Us," on the track "The State We're In." The album's four singles were "Hey Boy Hey Girl", "Let Forever Be", "Out of Control", and "Music: Response".
