The Beatles' second album in the United States, "Meet the Beatles!", was released by Capitol Records on January 20, 1964. It was the group's first American album to be issued by Capitol Records and featured Robert Freeman's iconic portrait of the Beatles.
The album topped the popular album chart for eleven weeks before being replaced by The Beatles' Second Album. Despite claiming to be the first album by the Beatles, "Meet the Beatles!" was preceded by Vee-Jay Records' release of Introducing... The Beatles. In 2004, the album was released on compact disc in both stereo and mono as part of The Capitol Albums, Volume 1 box set.
The album featured the December 1963 Capitol single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" along with its B-sides, "I Saw Her Standing There" and "This Boy", which had not appeared on an album in the UK at the time. The other nine tracks on the album were duplicated from its nearest UK counterpart album, With the Beatles. The album contained only original material and not cover versions of songs done by other artists, with the exception of "Till There Was You". "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy" were in a duophonic stereo, as Capitol had not been provided proper stereo mixes.
