"The B-52"'s received mostly positive reviews from critics, who appreciated the album's playful and energetic lyrics and party-like atmosphere. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice praised the band's "pop junk" and "innovations of early funk" adapted to a "forcebeat format," while Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described the band's style as a blend of pop, surf, avant-garde, punk, and white funk, celebrating "silliest aspects of pre-Beatles pop culture". Pat Blashill of Rolling Stone wrote that the band proved that "rock & roll still matters if it's about sex and hair and moving your body".

The B-52's reached number 59 on the Billboard 200 chart and the single "Rock Lobster" reached number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003, VH1 named the album the 99th greatest of all time. John Lennon, who passed away shortly before, had also expressed his appreciation for the album. In Alan Cross' 1995 book "The Alternative Music Almanac", the album was listed as one of the 10 Classic Alternative Albums at number nine. In 2020, it was ranked number 198 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
