Tales of Terror, a hardcore punk band from California, released their eponymous first and only full-length album on September 1, 1984 under the label CD Presents. The album received recognition from Seattle grunge band Green River, who covered one of their songs as a tribute.

The band gained popularity with college radio stations playing their songs, particularly "Over Elvis Worship". The album received positive reviews from music critics, with Al Flipside describing their music as mid-tempo driving grunge rock that gets pretty chaotic, and Tim Yohannan calling it totally drunken, power-chord punk rock.

The album has also influenced other musicians such as Kurt Cobain, whose Journals listed it at number 32 in a list of 50 albums, and Mudhoney, who released a tribute song titled "Tales of Terror" in 2008. The Melvins covered one of their songs, "Romance", on their covers album "Everybody Loves Sausages", while Crystal Fairy, a band featuring members of The Melvins, At The Drive In, and Le Butcherettes, covered "Possession" on their self-titled 2017 album.
