"Innervisions", Stevie Wonder's sixteenth studio album, was released on August 3, 1973, under the Tamla label, a subsidiary of Motown Records. It is considered one of his best works and one of the greatest albums ever made.

The album marked a transition for Stevie Wonder from romantic ballads into a more musically mature and socially conscious artist. Stevie Wonder played almost all of the instruments and made prominent use of synthesizers throughout the album, experimenting with the T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer system.

The album peaked at number four on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart and won Album of the Year and Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording at the 16th Grammy Awards. The nine tracks encompass a wide range of themes and issues, including drug abuse, inequality, and love. The album's closing track, "He's Misstra Know-It-All" is a scathing attack on then-US President Richard Nixon.

The album's release was followed by a car accident in which Stevie Wonder suffered a severe brain contusion and lay in a coma for ten days. The accident changed his thinking, and he became more spiritual and conscious of life's importance.
