Saccharine Trust's first EP, "Paganicons", was released through SST on December 10, 1981. The band was influenced by Minutemen and aimed to create an album that experimented with various types of rock music. Guitarist Joe Baiza viewed music as a conceptual art project.
The EP's cover art was originally intended for New Alliance Records' compilation Cracks in the Sidewalk, but after it was rejected, Baiza used it for "Paganicons" instead. While Allmusic gave the EP a positive review, critic John Dougan was not impressed by vocalist Jack Brewer's performance, describing it as "especially irritating and pretentious".
However, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana ranked "Paganicons" as his ninth favorite record in a journal. Despite Brewer's vocals, Dougan noted that the EP showcased an interesting band, particularly in Baiza's abrasive guitar playing.
