The album "Joyride" was released in 1991 by Swedish pop duo Roxette as the follow-up to their successful album "Look Sharp!" and their hit single "It Must Have Been Love" from the Pretty Woman soundtrack. The album was recorded over 11 months in Sweden, with the duo under pressure from their record label to deliver a successful follow-up album. Despite resistance to relocate to Los Angeles and work with American producers, the album was a critical and commercial success, with several hit singles and topping the charts in seven European countries. The duo went on an extensive tour to support the record and sold over 11 million copies worldwide.

The album's primary songwriter, Per Gessle, started work on the album in 1990 at a recording studio he co-founded in Halmstad, joined later by vocalist Marie Fredriksson. They recorded over twenty-five demos and worked with producer Clarence Öfwerman at EMI Studios in Stockholm. Gessle wrote all the lyrics on the album and composed most of the music, with Fredriksson co-writing the music for one song and composing another, "Watercolors in the Rain". The song is more folk-oriented than their previous work and reflects Fredriksson's Swedish-language solo work.
