The album received positive reviews from critics and was featured on many "Best Albums of 2013" lists by major publications. It also had a successful commercial performance, debuting at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and selling 74,000 copies in its first week of release. The album was promoted by five singles: "Pain", "Numbers on the Boards", "Sweet Serenade", "Let Me Love You", and "Nosetalgia", as well as the promotional single "Who I Am".

Pusha T's journey to his debut album began after he established his solo career by signing a deal with GOOD Music in September 2010. He released his first solo project, a mixtape titled "Fear of God", in 2011, followed by an extended play," Fear of God II: Let Us Pray", later that year. He then began working on his debut album, which originally had production from Kanye West, The Neptunes, Bangladesh, Ryan Leslie, and Alex da Kid, but was pushed back to 2013 due to his participation in GOOD Music's first compilation album "Cruel Summer".

In 2012, Pusha T revealed that he was heavily influenced by the 1997 film "The Devil's Advocate" while creating his album, stating that it had a similar "dark but visually beautiful" feel. He also said that the album title, "My Name Is My Name", was inspired by a catchphrase from the series "The Wire" and embodied his presence in the rap game. In 2013, Pusha T announced that the album would include 13 songs and that he had already finished 11 of them.

In April 2013, during Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Pusha T announced that he would be going to Paris to put the final touches on the album, and would then announce a release date. In June, he set to turn in the album to Def Jam for mastering, however, Kanye West presented Pusha with additional beats. The album was then mastered at New York's Sterling Sound, with Chris Gehringer.
