"Screamadelica" is the third studio album by the Scottish rock band Primal Scream, released in 1991. The album marked a significant departure from the band's earlier, more traditional rock sound and featured a mix of dance and electronic music, incorporating elements of house, techno, and acid house.
The album's title, "Screamadelica", was coined by the band's vocalist Bobby Gillespie and refers to the album's fusion of rock, dance, and psychedelic music. The album's cover art, which features a collage of various images, including a Hindu goddess, a Hindu god, and a skeleton, was designed by Gillespie and reflects the album's themes of spirituality and transcendence.
The record's lead single, "Movin' On Up", was released in June 1991 and became the band's first top 40 hit, reaching the top 20 in the UK. The album's second single, "Loaded", was released in August 1991 and became a hit in the UK, reaching the top 10.
"Screamadelica" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and is widely considered one of the best albums of the 1990s. It won the 1992 Mercury Prize, an annual award for the best album from the UK and Ireland, and was listed at number 35 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The album's success helped to bring dance and electronic music to a wider rock audience and helped to pave the way for the mainstream success of other electronic-influenced rock bands in the 1990s, such as The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy.
In addition to its electronic and dance influences, "Screamadelica" also incorporated elements of funk, soul, and psychedelic rock. The album featured guest appearances from several musicians, including former Rolling Stones member Mick Taylor, who played guitar on several tracks, and gospel singer Linda Lewis, who provided backing vocals on "Damaged".
"Screamadelica" was produced by Primal Scream and Andrew Weatherall, a British DJ and producer known for his work in the acid house and techno genres. The album was recorded at several studios in London and was mixed by Weatherall.
