The album was recorded in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios in London, using multitrack recording, tape loops, and analogue synthesisers, and was engineered by Alan Parsons. The album explores themes such as conflict, greed, time, death, and mental illness and features snippets from interviews and philosophical quotations.
The sleeve, designed by Storm Thorgerson, depicts a prismatic spectrum. The album was promoted with two singles, "Money" and "Us and Them". "The Dark Side of the Moon" is one of the most critically acclaimed albums and has been certified 14 times platinum in the United Kingdom, selling over 45 million copies worldwide. It is often considered one of the greatest albums of all time and was selected for preservation in the US National Recording Registry in 2012.
