He is also a skilled multi-instrumentalist, proficient on a wide range of instruments including guitar, piano, banjo, and mandolin.
Cook was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in the nearby town of Eau Claire. He began playing music at a young age, and formed his first band, DeYarmond Edison, with a group of friends while attending college in Eau Claire. The band, which also included Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver fame), gained a following in the local music scene and released two albums before disbanding in 2006.
Phil Cook went on to co-found the band Megafaun with his brothers Brad and Phil, which released three critically acclaimed albums before disbanding in 2012. In the meantime, Cook also began collaborating with Hiss Golden Messenger frontman MC Taylor, and joined the band as a full-time member in 2013.
As a member of Hiss Golden Messenger, Phil Cook has contributed his musical skills and songwriting talent to the band's folk and Americana-influenced sound. He has appeared on all of the band's albums and has played a key role in their development as an act.
In addition to his work with these bands, Phil Cook has also released several solo albums, including "Southland Mission" (2012), "Guitar in the Ground" (2019), "Sinking, Thinking" (2020) and "All These Years" (2021).
