She enlisted John Cale, a former member of the Velvet Underground, as the producer. The album's music is heavily influenced by the minimalist style of the emerging punk rock genre, with simple chord progressions and a willingness to improvise and incorporate elements from other genres.
The lyrics on the album are a mix of personal experiences and more fantastical imagery. The album also features covers of the rock standards "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances".
At the time of its release, the album had modest commercial success and was widely acclaimed by critics. It is considered a seminal album in the history of punk and rock music and has been included in many lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2009, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry as a culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant work.
