The album was co-produced by John Cale and Joe Boyd and features elements of Western traditional pop. It includes the song "Janitor of Lunacy" written as a tribute to her friend Brian Jones.
The album cover features stills from the film "The Inner Scar" by Philippe Garrel, which starred Nico. The album received a small cult following upon its release but was overlooked by many critics and the public. However, it has received praise from critics in subsequent years, with AllMusic and The New Rolling Stone Album Guide providing a positive reception. It was later reinterpreted by Throbbing Gristle in 2012 under the name X-TG The Album.
