"Loveless", the second studio album by the rock band My Bloody Valentine from Ireland and England, was released on November 4, 1991 by Creation Records in the UK and Sire Records in the US. The album's recording took place over two and a half years, from February 1989 to September 1991, with Kevin Shields, the band's lead vocalist and guitarist, experimenting with various guitar techniques and meticulous production methods. The recording process involved hiring nineteen different studios and several engineers, and the final production cost was rumored to be £250,000.
"Loveless" was preceded by two EPs, "Glider" (1990) and "Tremolo" (1991), and reached number 24 on the UK Albums Chart. It received critical acclaim for its sonic innovations and Shields' reinvention of the guitar. However, Creation Records owner Alan McGee found Shields too difficult to work with, which led to the band being dropped from the label after the album's release. My Bloody Valentine struggled to record a follow-up album and eventually disbanded in 1997, with "Loveless" being their last full-length release until 2013's m b v.
Since its release, "Loveless" has been widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest albums of all time and a landmark of the shoegaze subgenre. It has also been recognized as a significant influence on many subsequent artists. In 2012, the album was reissued as a two-CD set with remastered tracks and a previously unreleased half-inch analogue tape version. It peaked on several international charts and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry in 2013.
