Miguel, an American R&B singer-songwriter, released his second studio album, "Kaleidoscope Dream", on September 25, 2012, through Black Ice Records, ByStorm Entertainment, and RCA Records. After his debut album's commercial success, Miguel aimed to play a more significant role in the creative process, taking on the principal writer and producer roles for "Kaleidoscope Dream". The album was mostly recorded at Platinum Sound Studios in New York City and MJP Studios in Los Angeles, with producer-musicians like Oak Felder, Jerry Duplessis, and Salaam Remi.
Miguel wanted to explore the roots of R&B in "Kaleidoscope Dream" and used the guitar as a primary source for his compositions. He and his studio personnel incorporated a mix of pop, funk, rock, soul, electronic, and psychedelic genres into the music, using dense bass lines, buzzing synthesizers, and hazy, reverbed sounds. The album's title reflects both the idea of life as a metaphor and the creative freedom that dreams offer. Miguel aimed to express his lifestyle and personality through the album's themes of sex, romance, and existential ideas.
Miguel previewed the songs from "Kaleidoscope Dream" through a series of free EPs and promoted the album with three singles, including "Adorn", his most successful single to date. He toured North America and Europe from 2012 to 2013 to support the album's promotion. "Kaleidoscope Dream" debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 71,000 copies sold in its first week and sold a total of 535,000 copies by 2015. The album received critical acclaim for its innovative and appealing R&B sound, with reviewers praising Miguel's singing and songwriting abilities.
