Although not a commercial success, the album established Mazzy Star as a unique band with a unique sound. Reviewers praised the album's "coldly beautiful" quality, but criticized its lack of focus, with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana listing it in his top fifty albums of all time.

In 2018, Pitchfork ranked it at number 29 on its list of the 30 best dream pop albums.
