It received critical acclaim upon its release and was even nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. Musically, the album has been described as dance-punk, dance-rock, electronica, electronic rock, and indie rock.
The album includes songs from the band's six-part, 46-minute-long 2006 composition "45:33". "Sound of Silver" was dedicated to Dr. George Kamen, who passed away in 2006 and was a pioneer of group therapy.
The entire album was available for streaming on the band's MySpace page for several weeks before and after its release. It received widespread critical acclaim and was ranked as the tenth best-reviewed album of 2007 by Metacritic.
