The album was recorded in one day in Milwaukee and was originally released on the Audiophile label with only 300 copies. Elektra Records reissued it later in 1963 but without some tracks, which were restored when Red House digitally remastered and reissued the album in 1995. The album was critically acclaimed, with one reviewer calling it "one of the defining albums of the folk revival." Koerner, Ray & Glover were later inducted into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame in 2008.
