Keith Sweat's first album, "Make It Last Forever", was recorded in New York City at INS Recording and Power Play Studios. It was released on November 24, 1987, and achieved great success, reaching number one on the Top R&B Albums chart for three weeks and number 15 on the Billboard 200.
Sweat and Teddy Riley produced most of the album, making it one of the first to feature the new jack swing sound. "I Want Her" was the biggest hit from the album, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Sweat's first number-one R&B hit. The title track, a duet with Jacci McGhee, followed "I Want Her" and reached number two on the R&B chart. "Don't Stop Your Love" and "Something Just Ain't Right" were also successful top ten hits on the R&B charts. "Make It Last Forever" was certified triple platinum by the RIAA in 1994, and "I Want Her" was certified gold in 1989.
Sweat and Riley first met while performing in different bands and later worked together after Sweat sought out Riley's talents. Riley was initially hesitant to work on R&B music, but Sweat convinced him to collaborate on some songs. At the time, Riley had been asked to oversee the sessions for Al B. Sure!'s debut album.
