West enlisted producer Rick Rubin's help two weeks before the album's release date to simplify the sound of "Yeezus" to a more minimalistic approach. The album is known for its experimental and sonically harsh nature, drawing inspiration from various genres such as industrial, acid house, electro, punk, and Chicago drill. West's use of samples, particularly on "Blood on the Leaves" which contains a sample from Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit" is also unconventional.

"Yeezus" received critical acclaim, with many reviewers praising its bold direction, although public response was mixed. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 327,000 copies in the first week of release. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards, and it has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. Yeezus is widely regarded as one of the best albums of the 2010s, and Rolling Stone included it on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time at number 269.
