The story follows photojournalist Russell Price, who is covering a military conflict in Chad when he meets his friend Oates, a mercenary. After attending a party, he and fellow journalist Claire Stryder travel to Nicaragua to cover the conflict between the government of President Somoza and rebels led by Rafael. Russell is arrested for no reason and meets a French spy who tells him they might find Rafael in León. They cover a gun battle and Russell meets rebels led by Pedro, who gives him a baseball to take to Dennis Martinez. Later, Russell meets Oates again, who has switched sides and kills Pedro. The rebels ask Russell to fake a photo of their leader, and he and Claire agree to help them.

Alex, a friend of Russell's, comes to Nicaragua to get an interview with Rafael, but he learns of Russell's affair with his girlfriend Claire. They get lost on their way back to the hotel and Alex is executed by government troops, while Russell takes pictures. Russell witnesses rebels killing a French spy who has been using him to get photographs of rebel leaders, who are then targeted for assassination. Russell's photographs are broadcast worldwide, Somoza flees to Miami, and Claire and Russell leave the country. The film ends with Claire asking if they fell in love too quickly, to which Russell responds that he would do it all over again.

On October 21, 1983, Under Fire was released in 816 cinemas and made $1,837,768 during its opening weekend, with an average of $2,252 per theater. The movie ultimately earned $5,696,391 in North America.
