The album has a stripped-down sound that combines traditional African and R&B with jazz and blues, and focuses on the African-American community and inner city in the 1970s.
It was Scott-Heron and Jackson's debut release for Strata-East, and became their only release for the independent jazz label. Although it had limited distribution upon its release, "Winter in America" achieved considerable commercial success with the help of its only single, "The Bottle".
It debuted at number six on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart and eventually sold over 300,000 copies in the United States. Although it was initially overlooked by critics, it has since received critical acclaim and has been noted for its influence on derivative music forms such as neo soul and hip hop.
