In 2002, it was selected by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress to be preserved in its archives as an important contribution to American popular music. Rolling Stone ranked it as the 11th greatest album of all time in 2003, and it was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The album features 15 out of the 20 songs Elvis recorded at Sun, including "Mystery Train" and "That's All Right", which were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list. "The Sun Sessions" was also praised by critics as a quintessential rockabilly album, mixing elements of blues, gospel, and hillbilly music to create Elvis Presley's unique style.
