Daniel Johnston's fifth music cassette album, "Yip/Jump Music", was self-released in 1983. The recording took place during the summer of that year in his brother's garage in Texas, where he converted it into a recording studio.
The album was later re-released by Stress Records in 1986 on cassette, and in 1988 by Homestead Records on CD and double LP. It has also been re-released twice by Eternal Yip Eye Music, once in 2003 on CD and CD-R, and once in 2007 as a double vinyl LP.
"Yip/Jump Music" was the first album to feature Daniel Johnston on the chord organ. He also performed tracks on a detuned ukulele. The album was recorded over the course of 1983, with sessions starting in April and concluding before "Hi, How Are You" was recorded in September. According to the album's liner notes, most of the material was written in May 1983.
The album makes several references to Daniel Johnston's relocation to Texas. Stylistically, it uses progressions from rock and roll, doo-wop, and religious hymns, with a clear influence from The Beatles.
