It was released exclusively on Apple Music on May 13, 2016, before becoming available on other streaming services on May 27. "Coloring Book" was praised for its unique combination of hip hop and gospel sounds, winning Best Rap Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Chance the Rapper was inspired to make the mixtape after becoming more religious upon learning that his girlfriend was pregnant and his daughter had a heart condition.
The mixtape's release date was revealed by Jimmy Fallon after Chance the Rapper's performance of "Blessings" on his show. In its first week, "Coloring Book" debuted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 based solely on streaming, becoming the first release to chart on the Billboard 200 solely on streams.
