"Jamboree" features a darker and more distorted sound than the band's previous work, with an increased emphasis on Calvin Johnson's deep voice. Heather Lewis provides vocals on only two of the album's tracks. Despite the band's focus on exuberance over musicianship, "Jamboree" received critical acclaim, and two tracks from the album, "Bewitched" and "Indian Summer", were included in Pitchfork's 2005 article on twee pop entitled "Twee as Fuck". The latter track became the group's best-known song and was covered by various artists, including dream pop group Luna and Ben Gibbard for the soundtrack to the Kurt Cobain documentary "About a Son". AllMusic described "Jamboree" as a collection of "marvels of innocence and ingenuity".
