It was recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas and mixed in New York City. The all-black cover of the album was designed as a symbol of mourning for Scott. The album was a massive commercial success, selling an estimated 50 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The band also supported the album with a yearlong world tour. Since its release, the album has been reissued and remastered multiple times, and was certified 25x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2019.
